Afghan Government Suspends Women's Radio Station

In a statement issued yesterday evening, the Ministry of Information and Culture of Afghanistan has suspended the broadcasting of women's radio stations. The reason for the suspension of broadcasting is cited as "violations in broadcasting policy" and "unauthorized use of licenses."

The ministry also accused the radio station "Bigum," established in 2021, of providing content for foreign television channels. Despite the complexity of the media landscape in Afghanistan, several women's radio stations continue to operate in the country. In this context, the suspension of broadcasting of the radio station "Bigum" comes amid increased restrictions on press freedom in Afghanistan since the return of the Taliban to power.

Media defenders note the severe restrictions on the freedom of the press in the country since the moment of the Taliban's return to power.
